  • The super sexy sounds of Psalms

The super sexy sounds of PsalmsThursday, November 26, 2009, 09:05
Having built a reputation with their formidable thrill-a-minute live sets and eclectic sounds, Bath-based band Psalms head down to Midsomer Norton's Wunderbar on Saturday for what promises to be a wild night of high-octane riff 'n' roll.
Your Time spoke to Psalms frontman Tom Goblin to get the lowdown on the band.Your Time: How did Psalms come about?Tom: Well about three years ago, myself and the other two original members Les Preston and Tom Samson, met at City of Bath College.Originally, I wanted to start a band, the idea was to have a band that was rock 'n' metal but you can dance to it.My starting point was to get a drummer.I knew about Les and his drumming, I approached him and we started it off.About a month later, Les and I decided we wanted someone on keys or synth, so we went and found Tom Samson. He was a friend of a friend and we gave him a small audition ... and that's the roots of the band. Can you tell us a bit about your musical background?Well like I said we wanted powerful in your face music, but we also wanted to see people dance. Each band member had very different musical influences, the only genre that we all had in common would of been metal. So our music became metal/rock with dance and funk music influences.Have you got a CD and what do you write about in your songs? We had an EP out called These Words which we now give away for free on our website. The new album is out before Christmas and the single is also available for free download at www.psalmsmusic.co.uk.I write songs about what I know, so I have a few songs that relate to important moments in my life and the rest are about sex.Do you think the music scene in the area is healthy and could more be done for young bands?Yeah, the music scene in Bath and surrounding areas is good. There's some really good venues and a really good alternative scene.A few venues are shutting down, which is a shame, but the majority of gigs around the Avon area, if promoted properly, are always full. What has been the biggest highlight for Psalms so far?We have had loads of awesome gigs, all around the country, from Birmingham to London, Cardiff to Weymouth.I find it hard to pick a highlight, because I enjoy every one for what it is.Especially since our new bassist, Stuwart Withers joined, the atmosphere at our gigs have been amazing. What can people expect at a Psalms gig?How do I define a Psalms gigs, in your face, exciting and sexy ... I know you will leave with a smile on your face.See what I mean when we play the Wunderbar on Saturday. We're also playing Moles in Bath on Thursday, December 3 and The Orange Box in Yeovil on Saturday, December 5.What do you hope to achieve with Psalms and where would you like to be with the band this time next year?I'm hoping to have a gig at least once a week.I wanna start recording our second album, It's For You, and I just want to let the world know that Psalms aren't going anywhere. We are hear to rock your socks off for years to come!Tonight, The Wunderbar welcomes prog-metallers My Hanging Garden and indie punks Frenemies.Admission on both nights and music starts about 8pm.

Hundred Days with support from Psalms
    19-08-2009 The Rifleman’s Glastonbury
It was with great anticipation and excitement that I made the short journey across to the Rifleman’s in Glastonbury on a warm Wednesday night.
Headlining the gig tonight was Yeovil based rock band Hundred Days. After hearing plenty about them, I had not had the opportunity to see them live.
The support for the evening was Bath based bandPsalms, who were unknown to me. After grabbing a quick pint I made it in just in time to watch them kick off a set that blew me away.
With a lead Vocalist/Guitarist, Bassist, Drummer, and Keyboard player, they had a unconventional line up, but they have a unconventional sound. Labeling them as a simple Dance/Rock band would be unfair, as they have elements in their music from a variety of genres, including a tip of the cap to pioneers of Prog RockYes and Pink Floyd, along with bursts of Heavy Metal and full on Prodigy-esque hard dance. These guys certainly have great potential, especially with standout track ‘Easy’, which had the crowd whipped into a frenzy. Watch out for Psalms, they are going make a big dent in the industry.
As the Rifleman’s fill up with people, Hundred Days front man Stuart Curtin asks the crowd if we “are ready to rock“, the answer is a unanimous yes as the 3 piece storm into ‘Blackheart’ from their debut album, which kicks off with a riff Led Zeppelin would have been proud of, and proceeds to send the crowd into spontaneous head banging. Hundred Days keep up the pace with the immensely catchy ‘No Better’, and a excellent cover of ‘Hysteria’ by Muse. Slower tracks ‘Broken in hell’, and ‘Suicide Joe’ still have a certain charm about them, the latter to be featured on the forthcoming album. After a sweaty set of almost a hour, it was clear to see here was a band that thoroughly enjoy playing live, and their energy and enthusiasm rubs off on you.
In Stuart Curtin they have a great front man whose live voice was impeccable. Add in a great rhythm section of drummer Ryan Leese and Bassist Simon Evans, and they have the perfect mix.
I am surprised Hundred Days are not signed to a label, as they have the stage presence, the song writing ability, and the talent to go all the way. I for one certainly hope they get there.
