KSV 064 Minimal Man / Peach of Immortality - Hardart Gallery, Washington, DC, November 16, 1984

Minimal Man's Patrick Miller and Peach of Immortality's Tom Smith met via last century's peculiar land post technology (i.e., mail), eventually resolving to bring the former's group to the nation's bleak capital (then under the charred thumb of the fetid cockblocker Reagan) for a performance. This indeed came to pass (at POI cellist Rogelio Maxwell's Hardart Gallery).

Minimal Man performed first, and then Miller joined Peach for a convulsive collaborative set. In your heart you'll know it's right...

Available here for the first time anywhere. There were a few dropouts in the Minimal Man cassette, and they were interpolated as digital glitches during the transfer process. Nothing too distracting, however. It's the only extant recording, so we must be tolerant. The POI recording was made from sound engineer Joe Kennedy's board mix, and it's absolutely fantastic for a 26-year-old chrome bias transcription.

This is the complete aktion from Sunday, November 22, minus ten unnecessarily recorded minutes of random post-performance gab. Those in attendance witnessed a transcendent set from Olga and Alexei, one that evoked the sounds of garbled line readings broadcast from blasted obsidian sets of outer-galactic, multi-species melodramas. Just terrific.

I joined the duo for a short collaborative set afterwards; all has been stitched together, sans the usual interim shuffling and shifting.

As (my Three Resurrected Drunkards partner) Pit Noack noted after Sauvage's performance, she could have turned the master gain of her mixer much louder, but she wisely demurred.

By tradition, each club has been up all night drinking (celebrating the conclusion of Schützenfest), and while Sousa enthusiasts are likely to find fault with the parade and its participants, casual ethnographers with a taste for the outré (and just plain fugged-up) will reach a different set of conclusions.

Diffusion was created for attendees of Ropecosm's April 11, 2009 performance at Silke Arp Bricht in Hannover. Additionally, Tochnit Aleph received five copies of the album, and three of our most avid KSV supporters were mailed the collection, which documented RC's April 3rd debut concert in Paris. It was thus an edition of 18... They're gone, man, gone!

KSV 018 Feinkost Lampe: 26. Februar (RK2 vs. Liondialer)

Recorded, as might be inferred from the title, at Feinkost Lampe, Hannover, on February 26, 2009. Karl left his digital recorder at home by accident, so he deployed a Sony DSC-S800 camera and captured the bulk of the evening's performances.

RK2 hail from Hannover. Liondialer split their time between London and Berlin.

For this performance, RK2 were: Andreas Brüning (bass), Torsten Heilmann (elektronik), Ruediger Klose (federphon, etc.). The fourth member of the combo, Jan Gieseke (elektronik und percussion), was unable to attend. Liondialer are: Greg Haines and Danny Saul (cello, acoustic guitar, voice, and electronics).

ORIGIN

Hallo Droogs,

My first night in Hannover with mein frau, Claudia Franke, was spent primarily at Silke Arp Bricht, the sub-basement venue now celebrating twenty years of chaos, smoke, and convivial, limitless toilet queues. After I'd spent a few minutes loitering by the bar, a friend of a friend introduced himself to me. He wanted to know what I was doing in such a moribund provincial capital, one with no scene, an apathetic populace, the usual loser litany. At that moment, Karl Schmidt Verlag, in all its impoverished grandiosity, was conceived.

I knew that very smart people were creating compelling, assaultive, perhaps even wholly other art in Hannover, and I'd seen evidence -- shredded fliers, fading handbills on lampposts and fuseboxes -- of sporadic demonic activity. The only problem was that the flailing sputters and blood-flecked declamations weren't being adequately transcribed. Things happened -- Pit Noack's Salon, the odd interesting Glocksee gig, the Silke offshoot, Silly Art Fick -- but without a firm (and appropriately calloused) curatorial hand. The "scene" existed, and thus did not require creation, but connective filaments needed to be sutured and tightly wound. There was a need for a foolhardy publisher, or at least one to provide a new perspective. Claudia gave the label its name.

The overriding aesthetic of KSV is one of immediacy - we'll publish instant releases, documents of actions and processes serving both as artifacts and communiques. The collaborative impulse will be dominant; we seek collision and collusion in equal measure. We trust the inherent arrogance in starting such a venture (and in making the claims presented herein) may also be understood as an expression of fervid curiosity, of the desire to hasten change, to contextualize modest or obscure ends without diminishing their scope or mystery. Above all, our efforts should engender amusement.

Each release is packaged in a hand-folded, full-color, double-sided paper sleeve designed and executed by a loose consortium of superb Hannoverian graphic artists: Andrea & Veith Elsper, Aenne Langhorst, Tobias Prinz, and Steffi Bruhn, Michaela Müller, and Jens Meier.
